OK..WARNING...the following is dry & boring to most busy families in our community...but it will effect you and the place your kids are growing up in.
I went to the Sustainable Village Conference present by the University of the Sunshine Coast & the Sunshine Coast Council last week and the Institute of Architects talk by Warren Bunker on the new draft planning scheme.
A SHORT QUICK SUMMARY
Both were focused on Maroochydore becoming the 9th largest city in the Nation to drive the region's economy and build the needed infrastructure to support the growth.
There was alot of talk about developing 'place identity' and moving away from 'place branding'.
Professor Tomaney, an expert in regional development from the University College London, spoke of how less developed regions make a vital contribition to national growth. He spoke about the importance of human capital and intergrated planning policies.
He said the QUESTIONS for the Sunshine Coast are:
1. Understanding the local economy - evidence/foresight/vision
2. What kind of growth? - beyond GDP
(Little mentioned about 'post carbon sustainability at this event)
3. Scale: polycentricity & connectivity
4. Place Identity - beyond branding
This is the challenges of the existing Sunshine Coast Council and for the Noosa Region as it progresses with the de-amalgamation process to re establish controll of it's own collective of communities.
Let's hope this distinct 'point of difference' between the north & south can create the cultural diversity that's makes great places.
"At the moment the cheap jokes about Noosa are helping no one!"
Noosa is not a town itself - it is a collective of towns within a well respected and protected national park system.

Warren Bunker highlighted the importance of including positive submission during this draft plan community consultation period and that broader policy concerns will likely have more weight if raised through a professional body or community group.
IT IS TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE VALUES & VISIONS OF THE PLACE WE WANT TO LIVE IN.
