Friends surfing at Double Island Point believe they spotted the first pod of humpback whales travelling north this winter to breed.
Peregian Beach is one of those special places where the whales come quite close to the shoreline and can be seen from the beach.
One young humpback whale in particular, came in a little too close in August 1991, and beached itself at Peregian.
